Which product is right for my project?

Paintsmiths are proud to offer a wide range of traditional water-based paints that range from Zero to Low VOC formulations. 

Our Acrylic line offers a selection of interior/exterior wall coatings, and our Enamel line offers the highest technology in hard-wearing paints.

Coverage

These square meter estimates are based on the average to include two coats of coverage. 

  • 1 litre (3-5 sq m)
  • 5 litre (15-25 sq m)
  • 20 litre (60-100 sq m)

Preparation needed before Application

  • Move all furniture away from surfaces that need to be painted and ensure furniture is covered with an old sheet or painter’s drop sheet.
  • Ensure ceiling, walls and trim are free of dust.
  • Specified primer coats are to be applied prior to filling.
  • Fill any surface defects or nail holes with suitable filling material and smooth out the walls as needed.
  • Clean the surface of any residue or surface contamination.
  • Surfaces are to be completely dry
  • Use masking tape on surrounding edges for clean application.
  • Use a drop sheet on the floor underneath the wall you are painting.

Application

Step 1: Prime your surface

For New Drywall Surfaces:

  • Apply one coat of a water based primer.
  • Please allow for 2-4 hours minimum before overcoating 
  • Please note if there are any areas that have been rhinolited please see info below on correct primer for those areas alone. 


For New Rhinolited Surfaces:

  • Apply one coats of a Solvent based Plaster Primer or Bonding liquid
  • Please allow for 16 hours minimum before overcoating 


For Previously Painted Walls:

  • If your walls are in good condition and were previously painted in a water based matt paint you may apply your new acrylic paint directly over your existing paint.
  • If your walls are painted with a finish that has a sheen, lightly sand the surface, clean the surface of residue then proceed with a water based primer.
  • If your walls have any stains then we would highly recommend one coat of a universal undercoat before applying your acrylic paint.
  • If your walls were previously painted in a solvent based finishing paint you will need to apply a solvent based universal undercoat before applying any other water based paints. Do not apply a water based paint over a solvent based final paint. This excluding solvent based primers & undercoats which certainly can be over coated with water based paint.


Step 2: Paint

  • Make sure you properly stir the acrylic paint with a paddle (not a stick) before using to ensure that nothing is separated and sitting at the bottom of the bucket to allow for a more consistent color.
  • Our traditional paints can be rolled, sprayed or brushed on. 
  • Please allow for 4 hours minimum between coats. For optimal results and good coverage, two coats are recommended.
  • Once you’re done painting and while the paint is still drying remove tape at a 45 degree angle. Have a damp rag handy in case paint seeps. Peeling can happen if you wait to remove the tape once the paint is dry. 


Pro Tips:

  • We encourage you to work from top to bottom. This means paint your ceiling first and work your way down. 
  • Cut in edges with a brush then proceed to paint. Do one wall at a time.
  • To avoid getting paint on your freshly painted ceiling with the roller, make sure you paint a thicker border by the ceiling.
  • Leave your trim as the last step to avoid getting paint splatter on it while painting your walls.

Clean Up / Storage

Make sure you properly seal your bucket/can between coats and once you are completed with your application.
Please make sure you store the bucket/can in a cool area out of direct sunlight

Safety

Store and keep out of reach of children. As with all paints it is important to protect yourself by wearing protective eye wear and masks during preparatory work such as scraping and sanding. During application, use protective eye wear as it can irritate the eyes.

PREMIUM LOW SHEEN PAINT

An environmentally friendly, easy to apply, low-luster Pure Acrylic finishing coat. It dries to a durable stain resistant and washable finish. It is ideal for use as both interior and exterior finishes.

  • Recommended Usage: Interior Walls, Ceilings
  • Not recommended for: Not suitable for use directly onto gypsum plaster, or for use on floors and roofs.
  • Sheen: 20-35% Sheen Level 60 Degrees
  • Coverage: ±9m per litre per coat
  • Dry to Touch: 45 minutes, Recoat time: 6 hours
  • Application: Brush, Roller, Spray

An environmentally friendly, easy to apply, Matt Acrylic emulsion that dries to an attractive durable finish. It offers excellent hiding power and scrubability. Our 225 Acrylic finish is a non-reflective finish, making this perfect for areas where light reflection is unwanted.

  • Recommended Usage: Interior & Exterior Walls, Ceilings
  • Not recommended for: Not suitable for areas of high traffic.
  • Sheen: 3-3.5% Sheen Level 60 Degrees
  • Coverage: ±8m per litre per coat
  • Dry to Touch: 45 minutes, Recoat time: 4 hours
  • Application: Brush, Roller, Spray
  • Formulation: Zero VOC Formulated

HOUSE BRAND WITH SLIGHT SHEEN

An easy to apply modified Acrylic finishing coat. It dries to a durable stain resistant and washable finish. It is ideal for use as both interior and exterior finishes where a slight sheen is desired to improve clean-ability. 

  • Recommended Usage: Interior and Exterior Surfaces. Plaster Primer is recommended for application onto new or old cement plaster, concrete, porous brickwork and various types of building boards.  May also be applied to suitably primed wood, metals, fibre cement and gypsum plaster.
  • Not recommended for: Not suitable for areas of high traffic or humidity, or for areas where chemical resistance is required.
  • Sheen: 5-8% Sheen Level 60 Degrees
  • Coverage: ±9m per litre per coat
  •   Dry to Touch: 45 minutes, Recoat time: 6 hours
  •   Application: Brush, Roller, Spray
  •   Formulation: Low VOC Formulated

HOUSE BRAND MATT FINISH

Interior and Exterior Superior quality Acrylic Emulsion for use as a finishing coat.  With excellent durability and low in odour, it offers superior hiding power and with excellent scrubability.

  • Recommended Usage: Interior and Exterior Surfaces. Plaster Primer is recommended for application onto new or old cement plaster, concrete, porous brickwork and various types of building boards.  May also be applied to suitably primed wood, metals, fibre cement and gypsum plaster.
  • Not recommended for: Not suitable for areas of high traffic or humidity, or for areas where chemical resistance is required.

An environmentally friendly, extremely durable exterior textured finishing coat. Good for concealing fine hairline cracks.

  • Recommended Usage: Exterior Surfaces
  • Not recommended for:  Not suitable for use over severe hairline cracks (>0.5mm).
  • Sheen: 5-8% Sheen Level 60 Degrees

MIDAS Midacoat Satin Solvent Based Enamel

PREMIUM QUALITY SOLVENT BASED ENAMEL

A hard wearing, Alkyd-Gelkyd, non-drip enamel that dries to a mar-resistant satin finish. Has excellent flow and levelling properties.

  • Recommended Usage: Interior Doors, Trim, Millwork, & Metal
  • Not recommended for: Not recommended for exterior surfaces
  • Sheen: 35–70% Sheen Level @ 60 Degrees
  • Coverage: ±8m per litre per coat
  • Dry to Touch: 4 hours, Recoat Time: 16 hours (Dry Times can vary based on conditions)
